St. John's Cathedral Malta

Visited St. John Cathedral to see not one but two Carravaggios! This is the side entrance to the Cathedral. Like many great old entrances it is no longer in use. Shame. The largest and most famous painting 'the beheading of saint john the baptist' is housed at the opposite end of a side chapel to 'St Jerome writing'. The striking thing about the beheading is its size. Characters are life size and the painting takes up an entire wall. It has huge swathes of dark almost black parts of the canvas that make the grizzly beheading even more striking. 'St Jerom writing' is a little smaller but just as impressive. Both painting are 400 years old.
